Celcom Broadband Review

advertisement.gif

celcom-broadband-logo-small.jpgWell this is the 5th day I’ve been using Celcom Broadband. So far so good. Though it would be a good idea to make some review about it.

I’ve registered with Celcom on monday at Celcom Tower. The registration process is quite simple and surprisingly I can get connected in the night of the registration day. Quite fast eh?

I go for D68 package and the monthly charged is RM68. Speed for D68 package is capped at 384kbps. It’s good enough for normal surf. If you want a better speed you can opt for D98 package though, RM98 monthly. D98 will enjoy speed up to 3.6mbps. :hehe:

I’m using Sierra Wireless Aircard 875U to get connected. You can get this usb modem around RM700-900. Try find it on lelong.com.my or lowyat.

This is how it looks when its been attached to my Dell Vostro.

sierra-wireless-aircard-875u.jpg

About downloading speed, can’t say much about it. But here’s one tip you should follow, try to download everything using Flashget and Flashgot (Firefox add-on) or any download manager to get the highest speed possible.

Mostly you can get download speed around 15-35kb when downloading from international server.

I’m taking this screenshot while downloading Adobe Photoshop update using Flashget from Adobe server.

flashget-screenshot-for-celcom-broadband-review.jpg

Here’s another couple speed test from local server.

Measure the download speed using Speedtest.net For your information this test has been taken from Seksyen 7, Shah Alam. I’m at my brother house. I’ll try and put the result from Setapak when I get back to hostel. :)

This is the result from Cyberjaya server

and this is from Kuala Lumpur server

I didn’t put Torrent download speed though. Cause its always fluctuate and it depends 100% on peers location. If you can get connected to local peers your download speed should be okay and if you not, the speed would be linger around 1-3kb. :P

Cons
rapidshare_celcom.jpg

Because all Celcom Broadband users were sharing certain IP, chances to download something from Rapidshare is kind of hard. But I’ve heard the speed are bad anyway. So don’t bother. Search for other alternative or get a premium account instead. :)

That’s all for now. I’ll keep this post updated when new speed test available from other location.

C’mon join our discussion about Celcom broadband at forum.izzatz.com/

Nope. You will not get that 3.6Mbps. Im using D98 package in UTM Skudai which under HSDPA network. Top speed that I even get is 1.8Mbps. It is half from the speed they promised. But sometime the speed is lower than 20kbps. Usually happen at night between 10pm - 1am. But the speed is amazing in the morning and back to normal speed usually around 700kbps to 1Mbps.

I have sent a report to Celcom regarding the slowness connection here at UTM. And they have came to my college to test the speed test. I know about it after I got a phone call by a woman from Celcom KL. She said that their technician has made speed test and they got 1.2Mbps. I laughed when she said that. They know that they will not get the 3.6Mpbs speed but why they should promote the 3.6Mbps package. Better change the 3.6Mpbs to 1.2Mbps instead. Duh…

same with streamyx, cant nearly reach 800kbps…hope they will do sumtin to upgrade the service or maybe lower the price? aite?

I’m from Kelana Jaya and im using d98. I got extremely nice speed on the first day at around 170~262kBps the highest i’ve seen. But starting from the next day, I have a fluctuated speed of between 10~300kbps, sometimes 500kbps…

I must be dreaming on the first day T_T

I think u should go with sierra wireless or any other model tht support at least 3.6mbps, its ok to spend some money on it…its worth it

the wireless industry is developin so fast, mybe sooner or later there will be new telco could offer d ‘actual’ 3.6mbps speed :)

by the time they ‘think’ they can offer at 3.6, the price of the modem will be reduced rite.. n newer models will come in offering up to i dunno, 14.4? :D

She said (Celcom operator) that the maintenance is scheduled until 30th June…huhu.. I am looking toward that..

Ic Tikam Batu eh, I’m from Butterworth by the way. Around 45 minutes drive to go to Tikam Batu.

Forget about Maxis, Celcom had a better coverage.

Hmmm bout taking care d modem, just make sure you properly disconnect it before unplug the modem. From my experiences, my friends just cabut the modem without disconnect it and his modem already kaput twice. Luckily he tied to a contract so he can go to Maxis Center and request a new one. :p

  18. Izzatz wrote

It doesnt matter if it showed 7.2mbps. It just from the default E220 dialer. Celcom doesnt support 7.2mbps yet.

Anyway if you wanna find out whether your location had HSDPA coverage or not, try and call their customer services to confirm. :)

And regarding your network always switching from UMTS/3G < -> HSDPA, FYI its perfectly normal. Not a big deal.

alan: I can’t say much bout the speed that you were gettin. It all depends on concurrent user at your place. Some place maxis are better than celcom and some are not. The best way to find out is borrow your friends celcom sim card to test it out.

ali: celcom didn’t have that problem. It would work just fine on 32th floor.

E220 modem will installed the driver automatically once you plugged in the modem. As far as I’m concern the driver works fine in MS Vista.

Is there a probability that your MS Vista is corrupted? Do try on your friends laptop whether its working or not.

man, are you sure it was entirely DC or just connection freeze?

If it was connection freeze it is normal for a wireless connection. Happens to myself before. Celcom broadband will freeze when I surf until 5mb or so.

    Quite disappointing right? :P

  28. man wrote
    at 2:35 pm - 26th August 2008 Permalink

i think this is not about the freeze situation…..maybe yes or not….my condition is when i connected through my vodafone modem about 5~10 minute (approximate received data packet around 2000 byte) the connection will hang. It will display “page cannot be displayed” . If this happen i restart my machine and connected it again…sometime it need me to restart my machine lot of time only to get connected for 5~10 minute. 1 restart 5 minute, 2 restart = another 5 minute…..so if u want to connect for 30 minute u need to restart about 6 times……..:(

Ok nvm, are you using Vista? I remember someone had similar problem with yours that using Vista.

Here’s another suggestion, while you successfully connected try running some torrent, this will make your connection active and prevent it from idle.

This method works for me. If this failed, I’m not sure what’s going on.

I’ve read many postings not favouring Maxis. Yes, they are cheap, but sometimes the price also makes you wonder why. Their only competitor in this game is celcom.

I am using celcom for over a year and happy with it. Last year was using the PCMCIA modem, but my overheated wireless router screwed up the thing, so I have to get the E220 usb modem. It works swell :)

I talked to the customer service and to my surprise, they told me that every account is being “throtled”. i.e. Each account download limit per month is 5GB, basically the data transfer quota. So better set your browser to cache or use a proxy that cache data. Anyway, what I dont like is the next statement from the customer service when I asked what happen if I overlimit my download quota, the answer is “celcom will reduce your speed down to 218Kps”… Althought I am satisfied with celcom’s service, but I think this is not fair as I dont sign anything that state I’ve accepted their quota system.

Another thing. I always pay my bill every 2 months (save petrol or whatever, no interest, so why hurry right?).. The second month, the speed is always slower, I think they drop the speed as well when you have outstanding balance. This sort of “penalty” or “punishment” is also not in the terms and condition.

I can independantly use google maps, opera mini, watch utube and download themes etc to my phone. The speed is wellsaid…good. When the phone connected to my laptop, it will auto switch to phone mode which one of the fuctions is as modem (other than remote control ect, cool). The fastest speedtest I get around 222kbps. Fastest donwload I experienced was 56kpbs, one 76kpbs then slightly drop to 30kbps to 12kbps holyshit then to 8kbps. AND

I can play Ragnarok Online with it with no problem, super smooth. Torrent??? It’s runing, I already downloaded some movies already, and am downloading more now. Sorry celcom.

But Im planning to buy that huawei hsdpa usb modem (which offered by celcom, maxis and vodafone). The unlocked maxis and celcom ones are cheaper around myr320-350, the same model comes from celcom cost myr500. Duh is it worthy?

I’ve tried playing WOW with the CELCOM Broadband. there’s like around 0.75 second lag. sometimes it’s worse, especially during primetime (8.00-12.00). the line never disconnect you. but there’s sometimes an idle, which is your download speed are 0 for a little. i believe we were connected to the CELCOM server and the CELCOM server are connected to the Streamyx line. i believe the idle happen when the CELCOM server are disconnected from the streamyx line, but the server automatically reconnect. i believe CELCOM disconnect as much as Streamyx did, the different is, you were saved from the hassle of redialing.

Eida, eventhough it stated that its blocked but it still downloading the file in slow speed. There is nothing we can do about it as Celcom are shaping the torrent network. One thing you could do though is try to randomize your connection port.

Regarding the port forwarding, yes you right. Its meant for router. You don’t have to do anything if you connect your usb modem straight to your laptop/computer.

If you have any other question just ask, I’ll try to help.

    rosman,

Literally you can do nothing about it. You only can complaint to the support staff and keep on pushing them about your difficulties.

For now I suggest you downgrade to D68 @ RM68 per month. Why subscribe D98 when they can’t fulfill the promising speed.

I subscribed to Celcom Broadband since March, along with my CEP50. So far, OK. At times my vista task manager report max speed more than 700kbps, way more than the subscribed 384kbps. Sometimes don’t get the 3G coverage and had to settle on slower email download at 5kBps. Use Nokia 6120c as phone/modem.

If we complain not getting the subscribed speed, please try to understand the nature of networking first.

The link between our PC to ISP (celcom bb, maxis bb, streamyx, izzi and so on) is NOT the only link that connect our PC and the server we are downloading from! there are more links, can be hundreds or thousands, and how congested they are. at the time.

As with most broadband, the speed rate is “best effort” or maximum. Not the minimum. Plus, it is shared resource. The premium internet connection should be the direct connection to ISP such as TMNet Direct, you have dedicated line to TMNet backbone. But then the link to the server is still shared resource.

To get maximum transfer speed from the server, bring the PC to the server and connect directly. what’s the cost..

this time i want to tell u guys how to avoid your money from being swindled by this monopoly telco swindler. first by using prepaid or daily unlimited (RM6/24hrs) in case u don’t really use it much. if u works at office that have internet connection, just use your internet office. u also can subscribe low cost streamyx at home from RM20. Then if u r really a heavy user, yet u don’t have streamyx/wired telephone line at home nor u internet at office too, so it can’t be helped, just subscribe the RM68 package WITHOUT CONTRACT!!! yes, i really mean without u doing any contract with celcom. so that means u don’t hafta avoid the package with the plus of installment fees for the modem. if u r not smart enough u just can buy the modem with CASH from celcom. otherwise, buy it from hardware shops. but remember never subscribe the package that comes with contract. soon or later, there’s time that u will totally fadup with the service of this telco swindler corp. so if u already made contract with them, u canot end or break that contract easily, u still need to pay so like compound money to them, and again, u are ripped. i strongly suggest to those who desperate to use 3g ((of course that “broadband” term is the method of this corp to swindle ppl because its hardly to say that this is a broadband duh)) just get the RM68 monthly package and buy a 3g/hsdpa phone to use as modem. u also can browse internet via phone then. if once u feel that the service is worthless, just terminate ur account.

If we feel that the broadband is too bad, just switch back to dial-up and see what we can get.

    @ 25cents/min, 60min/hr, 24hr/day, 30day/mo pay up to this: RM1080.00 max 7.7GB.

even say 2hrs/day every day, still the broadband cheaper.

If want maximum performance, go for direct internet connection. prepare some RM30,000 per year for 256k say between KL and Shah Alam.

Well, not too bad for me.

    rEz,

I was also dependent on dialup before, thinking not using internet much then. Most internetting while at work. When have to do work outside office, then the need for internet goes up.
Some hotels charge RM36 for 24hrs. lucky if get free wifi.

Then use pay-per-use internet connection using handphone. For short session or small amount of data, no big deal. Once transfer 500k file, know the charge is RM5. Require transfer lots amount of data, immediately realize better take the unlimited. now feel rather free. 5GB limit is way above my need.

Use wisely, these broadbands are real bargain. Want to be a hog, even the RM300,000/year direct link cannot help :)

BTW this celcom bb is really sucks! I own rapidshare premium account, and the speed I can get around is 14kbps to 2kbps downloading WHAT THE HECK!!!!!

Celcomdebest ko boleh buat report ke tribunal, diorang memang buat kerja, tapi kene bayar RM5 la. Dan ko kena nyatakan tuntutan apa yang ko mau, contoh nak batalkan kontrak tanpa perlu bayar ke ataupun kalau ko dah lama guna tapi macam soyal service diorang ko bleh buat tuntutan mintak balik duit, tapi asas mesti kena kukuh la. contohnya RM68/bulan unlimited kan, tapi time kita nak guna je tak boleh. sepatutnya celcom kena reduce the bill deducting the faulty days. kalau diorang tak setuju ataupun main tarik tali je then buatlah report.

Bad connection sometimes. Really disturbing however. Already disconnected at this time of writing. will connect back.

What other options do we have. Pay-per-use again? Oh not again for sending 5mb files.

Does everyone notice that when using Celcom Broadband,, If you use too much bandwidth, your line will be capped.

    e.g
i’ve downloaded a lot files using celcom 3G, around 70GB for the previous month, and the next month you’ll end up having speed cap around 15KB/s >.< it happen until 2 week… haiz

And I’m have a few tips for torrent. :)

    /* I tried this on utorrent */

Try to avoid high number open port such as 25007.

Simply configure the port to 8080, if you are not using the port, and it will end up having worldwide peer discovery… :)

Using external proxy server also helpful… :)

that’s what i did… I can get good speed on celcom basic rm68 unlimited. it was around 40~60 KB/s…

I upgraded to celcom advance and didn’t tried the speedtest yet. :)

    Hope it’s gonna help.. ^^

KIRA, already noticed that, once before when I calling 1111, the welcoming voice was talkin about bandwidth limitation for a celcombb user to 5gb/month. But saying u downloaded 70GB for previous month (without “s”) is shocking me since I was also using torrent before (mjutorrent as its pronounced) through this celcom 3g, obviously I could download 1 movie of 700mb completed in two days (ON pc 12hr/day). But hmm….. for 14 days, let say…. 7 movies, yeah, its possible, 7Gb…. NO, how can u reached 70GB/month????

So kira-san, u were talkin about RM98 package on HSDPA line??? What modem u use, is it that obvious huawei??? And is that 80~100 KB/s comes from torrent? Is it possible for direct download? It’s not like I don’t believe in u, but i just don’t trust celcom, when most of ppl having poor service of this bb, u enjoy excellent service, b able to download torrent 24/7/ (consistent 100kb/s is indeed, awesome!!!) . I own rapidshare account but my premium download just can stay to 15kb/s only, and it can easily drop to 5kb/s. But what u talked about is very possible, because I also ever experienced 80kb/s torrent with this bb, but it not last long, can easily drop to 10@7kb/s most time. So where u get those very healthy torrents?? Can u share with me because I’m also an anime freak. Ja….
